한국산악회는 1945년에 설립한 조선산악회가 1948년에 개칭한 사회단체로, 설립 초기부터 일제에 유린된 국토를 구명하자는 취지의‘국토구명학술조사사업’을 전개하였습니다. 1947년 8월 당시 최초로 실시된 울릉도·독도 학술조사는 민간단체인 조선산악회가 주축이 되었고, 독도조사단을 파견한 우리 정부의 적극적인 협조로 진행되었습니다. 민관의 긴밀한 협력을 통한 울릉도·독도 학술조사는 1952년과 1953년에도 이어졌습니다.
