Dear Mr. President,
We are writing to acknowledge your telegram of March 25 last, for which we thank you.
The International Committee or the Red Cross was very pleased to learn that the agreement reached on March 18 between the Government of the Republic of Korea and Japanese Government would enable persons interned by both parties to be released and repatriated.
We had on several occasions drawn the attention of your Society to the oasweof Japanese fishermen interned at Pusan after finishing the term to which they had been sentenced, and we are glad to know that through the arrangements agreed upon by the Governments concerned, families who have been separated for a long time will be re-united. May we take this opportunity to express the hope that the Republic of Korea National Red Cross will make representations to the competant authorities with a view to obtaining remission of the remainder of their sentence as a special measure of clemenoy in the case of the fifty-seven fishermen still held in Pusan prison, so that they may not be left out of the repatriation operations to which the Government has consented?
As regards the Koreans interned at Omura camp who are already in process of repatriation, we should like to draw your attention to the case of those who have left their families in Japan. Most of those who entered that country illegally did so in order to join their near relatives. To repatriate them now to Korea no doubt solves the problem of their release, but that of the re-uniting of families remains outstanding. We have already written to the Japanese Red Cross on this subject and we hope that any individual cases of this kind which may arise after repatriation to Korea can be settled promptly in agreement with your Society.
