The 19th meeting of THE COMMITTEE ON Legal Status was held at Japanese Foreign Office from 10:30 a.m. to 12:10 noon, September 26. At this meeting, our side stated that we would like to listen to overall views of Japanese side to be made in really to remarks made by Mr. Yu Chin-O at the previous meeting covering our general views on overall points as regards the Korean residents problem. Japanese side replied that it would like to enter into item-by-item discussions on the basis of the Korean proposal submitted on October 20 last year, asserting that presentation of abstract views on the overall points would bear little significance. Japanese side wanted, for instance, to discuss first on the scope and definition of "Korean residents in Japan." In this connection, our side repeated our position as above. Japanese side also expressed its view that, of the points revised by the Korean side at the previous meeting, THE COMMITTEE ON Legal Status should not take up the matter on "compensation" as subject of discussions.
Our side strongly pointed out that the matter on compensation should be discussed at this Committee as was proposed by our side. With regard to the divergencies in the way of proceeding of Committee meeting mentioned as above, Japanese side merely said before the closing of today's meeting that it would present its views on the problem concerning the nationality of the Korean residents at the next session. It was decided that next meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m., September 30, Wednesday.
