Ambassador You Chan Yang made the following statement on the eve of his departure for Washington, D.C., December 5, 1951.
Naturally I am sorry that a larger area of peace agreement has not been achieved before it has become necessary for me to return to my duties in Washington.
I am hopeful that there will soon emerge a satisfactory, fair and friendly settlement between the two countries, so that we go on into the future as good friends working in mutual helpfulness for stability and peace in this part of the world and for the economic betterment of both our peoples.
It would be a great mistake to delay agreement on the outstanding issues. Delay inevitably raised the question of the sincerity and intention of the Government that insists on postponement.
and people of Japan to show their earnest endeavor to create that trust in the minds of Koreans. On numerous occasions I have stated the necessity of our two countries- Japan and Korea working together for the common good against that monstrous enemy-Communism. We have to prove to the free nations of the world how well and how friendly we could work out our mutual problems. At this point, I would like to say that I enjoyed working with your Japanese Government officials and delegates, and I am very confident that all our fundamental problems will be satisfactorily settled before the Japanese Peace Treaty goes into effect. For the sake of the future, and to guarantee mutual peace and co-prosperity we must decide today instead of putting off till tomorrow.
