Jap and North Korea Signed Deportation Agreement
Calcutta, Aug. 13 (AP) - The repatriation agreement between the Japanese Red Cross Society and the north Korean Red Cross Society was signed here Thursday. Yoshisuke Kasai, Vice President of the Red Cross Society of Japan and Li IL Kyung, Vice President of the Red Cross Society of north Korea signed on behalf of the respective Red Cross Societies.
They shook hands warmly after the signing was over.
The joint statement said "The Red Cross representatives of Korea and Japan take this opportunity to express their deep gratitude to the International Committee of the Red Cross for having offered a conference room for (Geneva ) talks and to the Goverment of India for having offered facilities for the signing in Calcutta."
Persons to be repartisted, the agreement stipulates, will be Korean citizens in Japan, including Koreans who have acquired Japanese nationality, their spouses, their children and other dependents, who desire to return to Korea.
The first repatriation ship shall leave the port of embarkation, Nihigata in Japan, within three months of the present agreement coming into effect.
A joint communique issued after the signing said that at talks in Geneva from April 13 to June 24, both sides had reached complete identity of views on the repatriation question.
4,000 Koreanns to be deported to N. Korea Every Month, Jap Daily reports
Tokyo, Aug.13 (AP)-The Japanese Red Cross will repatriate 4,000 Korean residents to north Korea every month, the newspaper Asahi reports from Calcutta, India Thursday.
Asahi 's Calcutta correspondent quoted Yoshisuke Kasai, Japan Red Cross Vice President, as saying in an interview that four repatriation ships each carrying 1,000 Koreans will be used.
Kasai was also quoted as saying:
We are not worried about south Korea's obstructions to the repatriation although some persons seem to be worried. We believe the south Korean side will eventually understand our humanitarian stand.
He cannot say yet how much cooperation Japan can expect from the International Red Cross and other sources.
