3. Gist of Talks:
Mr. Itagaki:
Now, I would like to open the second meeting of the matters regarding Art Objects of the Committee on Korean Claims. On June 4, 1958, the Korean side presented to the Japanese side a propesal with respect to art objects, and the Japanese side submitted the proposal to its high level for the instructions the reon. However, due to a considerable period of stalemate of the Overall Talks, the Japanese delegation has not been able to receive instructions is this regard. This being the reality, It is with regret that it is not in a position to give answer to the Korean proposal today though it wanted to go into detailed discussions at this Subcommittee at an early date. As the Talks have been resumed, we will try our best to obtain Government imstructions in this regard and to settle the problem as soon as possible.
Minister Yiu:
I could understand what you have told me now. It was with regret that the Overall Talks were suspended for a length of time. but, the Talks having being opened, now, I hope that the Japanese side would consult with the Government on the Korean proposal and give reply to the Korees propesal as soon as possible.
Mr. Itagaki:
The Japanese side, for its part, is making every effort to bring about a settlement of the problem of arts objects. However, I would like to ask an understanding from the Korean side on this matter. The key to an early settlement of the problem of art objects lies, first of all, the establishment of a basic policy of the Japanese side toward the problem of Korean art objects. And, such a policy has not yet been made by the Japanese side, under present circumstances, to settle this problem independently from the other pending issues. Of course, we would like to sattle the problem as soon as possible with all sincerity.
Minister Yiu:
I hope that the Japanese side, especially Mr. Itagaki, does not apare efforts for the prompt solution of the problem in question.
Mr. Itagaki:
As a member of the Japanese delegation and as a Director of competent Buresu on the matter, I will apare no effort. But, as you know, the reaction of the Dist toward 106 items of the arts objects which were returned previously by the Japanese side to the Koren side was something unusually critical. So, I think the Japanese side needs to be cautious in handling this matter.
Minister Yiu:
In view of the importance of the problem, I would like to say again that the metter be sattled as soon as possible.
Mr. Itagaki:
So do I.
Minister Yiu:
Le me suggest next Tuseday for our next meeting.
Mr. Itagaki:
I rather would like to propose next Saturday for the date of next meeting. we need time to obtain Government instructions.
Minister Yiu
No objection. And how about 10:30 a.m. ?
Mr. Itagaki:
That will do.
Ministar Yiu:
I wonder if you would mind Counseller Choi's acting on behalf of me as chief member when I am tied up in the future. I will attend the meeting from time to time, when necessary.
Mr. Itagaki:
Not at all. And Mr. Takano may, too, head the Japanese delegation when I am busy.
Minister Yiu:
Any suggestion you would like to make regarding press relass ?
I think we had better state that the both sides agreed to proceed the discussions with sincerity at this Subcommittee on Arts Objects.
Mr. Itagaki:
No objection.
