Regarding FTB-304. I met Vice-foreign Minister Yamada and Asian Affairs Director Iseki at the Vice-foreign Minister's office for 40 minutes from 9:30 this morning, December 5. At this meeting, I explained oar position on the residents issue and so on along the line of government strategy which I brought with me from Seoul. The reaction of Yamada and Iseki in this regard was generally favorable, although they expressed their hopes on a few points on which detailed report will be submitted via Monday pouch. They agreed with me to exert utmost efforts to work out solutions in this connection by December 10. Yamada and Iseki are expected to consult with higher authorities concerned to draw out concrete and definite position on the Japanese Government in this regard. In this connection they wanted to see me again on Monday.
For information, I made an appointment Ambassador MacArthur in the afternoon of Monday.
