FOREIGN RESIDENTS IN JAPAN.
According to the statistics compiled on the number of registered foreign nationals in Japan there were 680,364 foreigners from 67 foreign countries as of March, 1959.
Korean and Chinese nationals comprise some 96.83 percent of the total, the majority of such nationals having Japanese citizenship.
The rate of increase in the population of foreigners in this country averages about 10,000 persons annually. More than 55 percent of the persons registered live in the prefectures of Osaka, Hyogo, Aichi, Kyoto and Tokyo, indicating that the foreign population in Japan tends to be concentrated in certain areas.
Although foreigners are residing in all parts of Japan, some 45.7 percent of the entire registered foreign population is concentrated in the six big cities, Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Kobe, Nagoya and Kyoto, Totalling 287,601 persons.
This trend toward concentration in the urban areas is expected to become stronger in the future principally because more jobs are available in cities than in suburban towns and villages.
