3. The gist of talks:
(At this meeting the Korean side used Korean language and the Japanese side used Japanese language. Secretary Han interpreted Japanese into Korean, Upon the request by the Japanese side, Mr. Han assisted the Japanese side in interpreting Korean into Japanese)
Mr. Shoji:
May we start with the introduction of the Japanese members of this Committee?
Mr. Lee:
No objection.
Japanese side:
(Following the self-introduction of Mr. Shoji, the Japanese members introduced themselves.)
Mr. Lee:
I would like to introduce the Korean members of this Committee.
(Mr. Lee introduced the Korean members of the Committee of Korean Claims)
Mr. Shoji:
How shall we arrange procedural matters such as language, Summary Recaords, and Press Release for this Committee?
Mr. Lee:
As procedural matters for committee meeting have already been decided at the Plenary Session, we are to follow what have been decided at the Plenary Session.
Mr. Shoji:
Have you say subject in mind to discuss today?
Mr. Lee:
I would like to know your idea on how to proceed this Committee.
Mr. Shoji:
As you know, this Committee on Korean Claims has, under it, two sub-committees. How about to discuss on the proceeding of the sub-committees?
Mr. Lee:
Inasmuch this is the Opening Session, both sides introduced their respective members. How do you think to start discussing the matter at the next session?
Mr. Shoji:
It would be fine. Therefore, we would hold one more full Committee meeting to discuss things regarding the proceeding of the sub-committees.
Mr. Lee:
We would like to discuss at the next meeting these matters as to whether or not the main Committee would hold more meetings prior to entering into sub-committee works, and regarding the proceeding of sub-committee meetings, etc. I hope that the Japanese side would also make a study of the proceeding of next meeting in this Committee.
Mr. Shoji:
Do you mean that we would discuss at the next meeting on whether or not the sub-committee works will start following that meeting or on whether the main Committee will hold more meetings before the starting of works of the sub-committees?
Mr. Lee:
Yes, that is right.
Mr. Shoji:
No objection to your suggestion. Shall we set the date for next meeting? How would it be to hold next meeting on next Tuesday. May 27, 1958;
Mr. Lee:
That would be good, for Japanese side will be busy for these days with the election, reception of foreign dignitaries, the 3rd Asian Games, and so forth, although we would like to have the next meeting earlier.
Mr. Shoji:
How do you like to set the time and place of next meeting as today's?
Mr. Lee:
No objection.
Mr. Shoji:
Have you any particular idea as to Press Release on Today's meeting?
Mr. Lee:
In this regard, how about to follow the example of the first meeting of the Committee on Legal Status of Korean Residents?
Mr. Shoji:
That would be fine.
