Sir H.S. Parkes to Earl Granville.—(Received March 26)
(No. 2 Treaty) Peking, January 19, 1884.
My Lord,
WITH reference to my despatch No. 45 of the 7th ultimo, I have suggested, in a telegram of this date, that the Queen’s letter to the King of Corea, if one should be sent, should be inclosed in a suitable case, such as a silver-gilt box, embossed or engraved with the Royal Arms. The absence of a covering suited to the dignity of the communication would be liable to be misconstrued by the Ministers of the Corean Court, who treat with great reverence a missive from the Court of China, and they might think that it denoted on our part a limited degree of respect to our own Sovereign, which might affect their estimation of the value of the compliment which such a letter would confer upon their King.
