H.I.J. Majesty’s Minister resident in Corea
Sir:
It has given me pleasure to receive through the hands of the Commanding Officer of the I.J. Gunboat Banjö, a letter of introduction to you from the Hon. J.A. Bingham, Minister of the United States at Tokei.
I have no desire to conceal from you the fact that I have arrived in Corea with the purpose of negotiating a treaty of amity and commerce between this country and the United States.
Any attention you may think proper to give to this subject, towards its accomplishment will I have no doubt, be duly appreciated by my own government.
I shall remain at this anchorage until some settlement can be made either favorable or otherwise, while delay will be considered by the government of the United States as undesirable.
