Sir:
　I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a communicated addressed to Commander Shufeldt of the U.S.S. Wachusetts in reply to a letter from him in relation to the destruction of the U.S. Schooner General Sherman.
　My present object being the recovery of four of the crew of the Sherman, three of whom are Europeans and the others Chinese, reported to be still living and held as prisoners at the Provincial city. I shall proceed slowly and peacefully harming no one until I either reach the Provincial city, or the persons of those four people be placed under my authority. I enclose herewith a letter to the King of Corea, which I hope you will forward with as much dispatch as possible, kindly informing me when you dispatch the letter and the probable time that must elapse before I will receive the reply.
