Sir:
I transmit herewith a copy of a letter from the Secretary of State, dated the 14th inst. accompanied by a copy of a despatch from the U.S. Consul at Chee-foo, China, relative to a report that some of the crew of the American Schooner General Sherman which was destroyed in the waters of Corea, still survive and are in captivity among the Coreans.
Your predecessor, the late Rear Admiral Bell, in a despatch of the 30th of December last, apprized the Department of his having received reports, similar to those herewith transmitted, and announced his purpose, and announced his purpose, as soon as the waters of Corea were sufficiently clear of ice, to despatch a vessel to inquire further into the matter.
