“고구려의 숨결! 강서대묘”
만주와 한반도 북부지역의 광활한 영토를 700여 년간 지배한 고구려!
여러 종족을 결집하여 형성된 국가로 화려하고 장대한 수준 높은 문화를 꽃 피웠다.
그 가운데 100여기의 무덤 안에 그려진 벽화는 당시 생활상과 정신세계를 보여주는 중요한 사료이자 고구려인들의 역사와 숨결을 느낄 수 있는 문화유산으로써 세계적으로 높이 평가 받고 있다.
수많은 고구려의 고분벽화 중 절정기 작품으로 꼽히는 강서대묘.
평안남도 강서군 삼묘리에 있으며 7세기경에 만들어진 벽화고분이다.
무덤의 분구는 원형으로 되어있으며 크기는 직경 51m, 높이 9m에 이르며 내부 구조는 한 변의 길이가 3m를 넘는 널방과 널길로 이루어져 있다.
널방의 네 벽과 천정은 질이 좋고 잘 다듬어진 큰 화강암 판석으로 축조되었고, 사신도와 장식문양 등이 그려져 있다.
강서대묘 벽화는 생동감 넘치는 필치와 화려한 채색효과를 보여주는 고구려 회화의 대표작으로 2004년 유네스코 세계 문화유산으로 지정될 만큼 그 가치를 인정 받고 있다.
하지만 오늘날 강서대묘의 보존 상태는 그 위상을 무색하게 한다.
찬란한 벽화의 모습은 흐려지고 빠르게 훼손 되어가고 있다.
이대로 훼손이 진행될 경우 원래의 모습을 잃어버리게 될지도 모르는 절박함에 동북아역사재단이 강서대묘의 디지털복원을 추진하게 되었다.
본래 벽화가 가지고 있던 형태를 복원시키는 과정과 디지털 채색 작업을 거치며 강서대묘 벽화는 제 모습을 찾았고 다시금 그 현란한 위용을 우리 앞에 드러냈다.
새옷을 갈아입고 우리 앞에 다시 생생하게 되살아난 강서대묘 벽화고분.
마치 벽화 속에서 고구려인의 혼이 꿈틀대는 듯 하다.
널방 네 벽에 그려진 사신도.
동서남북을 지키고 있는 청룡, 백호, 주작, 현무 수호신들은 고구려인의 상상력과 영원불멸의 내세관을 엿볼 수 있게 한다.
무덤 내부를 생기로 가득 채우는 현무도.
거북과 뱀이 서로 엉켜 있는 독특한 형상의 현무도는 명확한 입체 표현으로 마치 살아 움직이 듯 생동하는 기운을 느낄 수 있게 한다.
보는 이를 압도하는 역동적인 청룡도.
속도감이 느껴지는 대각선 구도와 청룡의 기상을 보여주는 탄력 있는 필치는 청룡벽화 중 최고의 걸작이라 일컬을만 하다.
마음을 사로 잡는 강렬한 주작도.
비상을 준비 하듯 크게 펼친 날개, 둥글게 휘감아진 긴 꼬리는 당장이라도 창공을 가르며 날아 갈듯 사실감이 넘친다.
고구려의 기상이 느껴지는 백호도.
살아 움직이는 듯한 곡선의 흐름과 포효하듯 사실감 넘치는 백호의 표정은 맹수로써의 백호의 모습을 생생하게 보여주고 있다.
역동감과 생기가 넘치는 사신도와 달리 천정부 벽화는 또 다른 영감을 불러 일으킨다.
천정에는 신선사상을 반영한 선계가 표현되어 있다.
첫번째 단에는 인동당초무늬, 두번째 단에는 산악도와 선인 그리고 비천상.
세번째 단 삼각 고임석에는 연꽃무늬, 덮개석 중앙에는 황룡이 또아리를 틀고 있다.
천인상이나 산악도는 고구려인의 신선관을 보여주는 동시에 당시 산수화의 발전을 엿볼 수 있게 한다.
이처럼 1500년의 시간과 공간의 한계를 뛰어 넘어 화려하게 부활한 강서대묘는 벽화고분의 걸작을 품고 있다.

강서대묘에 깃든 혼과 열정 그리고 뛰어난 예술성은 치열하고 험난한 현대를 살아가는 우리에게도 변치 않는 감동으로 다가오고 있는 것이다.
Gangseo Daemyo (Tumulus): The Spirit of Goguryeo(Koguryo)
Goguryeo(Koguryo) is a kingdom that dominated the expansive territory of Manchuria and the northern regions of the Korean peninsula for 700 years.
Goguryeo(Koguryo), comprising many tribes, gave rise to a magnificent and sophisticated culture.
Of Goguryeo(Koguryo)’s many artifacts, the murals found in 100 or so tombs are particularly important historical remains that exemplify the lifestyle and mindset of the Goguryeo(Koguryo) people. They are also internationally recognized as a valuable cultural heritage that offers us a glimpse into the history and spirit of Goguryeo(Koguryo)
The 7th-century murals of the Gangseo Daemyo (one of the most famous tombs), located in Sammyo-li, Gangseo-gun, South Pyeongan-do, are regarded as products of Goguryeo(Koguryo)’s artistic mastery at its height.
The tomb is dome-shaped and measures 51 meters wide and 9 meters high. The interior consists of a pathway to the burial chamber and the burial chamber itself, whose sides are over 3 meters each.
The four walls and ceiling of the burial chamber are made of high-quality, refined granite flagstones and are adorned with decorative patterns and the paintings of the four tomb guardians.
Featuring lively brushstrokes and brilliant colors, the murals of the Gangseo Daemyo are considered masterpieces of Goguryeo(Koguryo) painting. Their value has been recognized internationally, receiving the UNESCO world heritage designation.
Preservation efforts have been lacking, however, and the mausoleum is in a condition unbefitting its stature. Its dazzling murals are fading in color and rapidly deteriorating.
Fearing that the murals?in their original condition?will become forever irretrievable if further damage is sustained, the Northeast Asian History Foundation decided to digitally restore the Gangseo Daemyo.
Through structural restoration and digital coloring, the murals have regained their original splendor and grandeur.
The murals of the Gangseo Daemyo have been revived, and with them, so has the spirit of the people of Goguryeo(Koguryo).
Sashindo : Guarding the Burial Chamber’s Four Walls
Cheongryong (Blue Dragon), Baekho (White Tiger), Jujak (Red Phoenix), and Hyeonmoo (Black Tortoise with Serpent body) protect the east, west, south, and north of the burial chamber, respectively. The painting demonstrates the imagination of the Goguryeo(Koguryo) people and their belief in immortality.
Hyeonmoodo : Exuding Vitality
The 3-D-rendering of the unique composition?a serpent coiled around a tortoise?is so realistic that the two animals appear alive and in movement.
Cheongryongdo : Overpowering Vigor
With powerful brushstrokes and a diagonal composition that conveys speed, it is a tour de force among Cheongryong murals.
Jujakdo : Power that Mesmerizes
With its widespread wings and long, coiled tail, the figure looks so realistic that it appears poised to take flight at any moment.
Baekhodo : Displaying the Spirit of Goguryeo(Koguryo)
The flowing curves that seem to ripple with life and the realistic rendering of the roaring tiger vividly portray the ferocity of the beast.
While the paintings of the four tomb guardians exude dynamism and vitality, the ceiling murals offer something else completely.
The enchanted land of enlightened beings is spread across the ceiling. The first platform is adorned with honeysuckle motifs. On the second platform, we find mountains, virtuous beings, and flying fairies. On the third platform, the goimseok (water-receiving stone) is decorated with lotus motifs, and there lies a coiled hwangryong (yellow dragon) at the center of the cover stone.
The paintings of the heavenly beings and the mountains exemplify the Goguryeo(Koguryo) people’s understanding of enlightened beings as well as advances in landscape painting.
Passing 1,500 years of time and space, the murals of the Gangseo Daemyo have now recaptured their majesty.
The Gangseo Daemyo boasts the pinnacle of Goguryeo(Koguryo)-era murals with the four tomb guardians. The murals embody the vigor and strength of Goguryeo(Koguryo).
