This is a detailed view of the Guimyeon (demon mask) depicted on the second (from the west) column capital on the northern wall of the main chamber. Remains of Guimyeon imagery rendered in black and white can be seen on the damaged capital. The outlines of the face, nose, and gaping mouth are still very vivid. The Guimyeon's gaping mouth reveals its white fangs. Its fierce demeanor is scary enough to exorcize any intruding evil spirit.
The intimidating Guimyeon motif was commonly used in ancient times to exorcize negative energy or evil spirits. The imagery was utilized in murals or roof tiles as guardian iconography.
