Horse on the eastern wall of the middle passage
zoom

This is a detailed view of the horse depicted in the lower portion of the mural on the eastern wall of the middle passage. This horse belongs to the military attaché that will escort the First Lady's ox carriage. Although the overall image is difficult to discern due to severe deterioration, the well-defined main characteristics of the horse can still be seen. The military attaché is performing final preparations such as checking the horse and saddle prior to embarking on his escort duties. One of the horse's front legs is drawn up in a lively display of its vitality and excitement.
Just as with the other depictions, the horse's legs look undersized for its body, and the legs and hooves appear as if the horse is wearing boots. Although the painting itself is not elaborate, the overall scene for the impending outing conveys a sense of energy and animation.
