This map was drawn from a sea voyage from England to China between 1792 and 1794 by George Macartney. Sir George Staunton wrote a travel book in 1797 that was translated the following year in to French. That the map in the travel book identifies the water on the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula as Mer de Corée shows that readers at that time were aware of the sea as such. The border between Joseon and Qing China is marked by a dotted line. It is difficult to distinguish the border, though, as there are no lines indicating the Amnok and Duman rivers.
