This is a detailed view of one of the Guimyeon (demon mask) depicted on the capital of the westernmost column facing the antechamber. The Guimyeon features big, bright green eyes, long white eyebrows, and a gaping mouth revealing its white fangs. Its fierce demeanor is scary enough to exorcize any intruding evil spirit. The Guimyeon's jagged mane further enhances its sinister appearance.
The intimidating Guimyeon motif was commonly used in ancient times to exorcize negative energy or evil spirits. The imagery was utilized in murals or roof tiles as guardian iconography. The use of this type of imagery can be considered as a sign of filial love and respect from the descendants of the entombed to ensure a peaceful eternal rest.
