This is a map inserted in the “Nouvel Atlas Portatif” published by French royal geographer Vaugondy in 1778. As this atlas was intended for general readers, the details of the map were simplified. Even though the shape of Hokkaido and Sakhalin are distorted, the area of Joseon is depicted much bigger than it really is beyond the borders of the Amnok and Duman Rivers. As for the names of waters on the east side of the Korean peninsula, Vaugondy preferred to mark the side on Korea as the Sea of Korea and the Japanese side the Sea of Japan. But on this map he marked it as Mer de Corée throughout.
