This is the map of Asia included in the "Atlas Universel" by the French royal cartographer Robert de Vaugondy. Vaugondy compiled this map by using earlier maps of Russia, China, and Manchuria. The name of the sea to the east of the Korean Peninsula is given as "Mer de Corée." The names of Ulleungdo and Dokdo, however, do not appear here, probably due to a lack of information on the region. The border between Joseon and Qing China follows Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d''Anville. Unlike other of d''Anville’s maps from the nineteenth century, this text shows the northeastern part of the Korean Peninsula, including Roktundo on the Duman River bisecting Primorsky Krai and northern Korea, as belonging to Joseon.
