This is a detailed view of the valet playing a pan flute in the Portrait of the Deceased on the northern wall of the antechamber in Tokhung-ri Tomb.
Koguryo era instruments can be divided into percussion, string, and wind instruments, and the So, or pan flute, is a wind instrument. The So is a type of pan flute used in ceremonial music from the Koguryo era and still used today. Slender, closed-ended bamboo tubes of varying lengths are placed in a wooden frame to create the instrument. The lower lip is pressed against the top a bamboo tube, and air is blown horizontally across the open end to create a sound. The pan flutist is also wearing a Geon (a type of ancient headwear that wraps around the entire head and tied in the back, similar to a bandanna).
