Published by the French royal cartographer Nicolas Sanson in 1670, this map shows the Korean Peninsula in the shape of a long peninsula. By 1650, Sanson had marked the Korean Peninsula as an island. This was based on the results of a survey made by Maerten Gerritsz Vries in 1644. This 1670 map shows the wide area in the northern peninsula as Pyeongan-do (Pinggan) and the East Sea as the Ocean Oriental. The name of Joseon was indicated as Corea, which was rare for a French map. The map marked Sakhalin as part of the continent where the Yupi people live, but with the relative positions of Hokkaido and Sakhalin rendered incorrectly.
