This is a detailed view of the house depicted on the northern wall of the main chamber in Susahn-ri Tomb. The grand house featuring Giwa roofs (traditional Korean roof tiles) is surmised to be the noble couple's residence. Long, narrows strips of fabric hang from the eaves of the roof, underneath which a cloth-covered pavilion is depicted. Although nobility were depicted sitting under pavilions in early Koguryo-era tomb murals, this motif was slowly replaced by images of nobles sitting under Giwa-roof houses during the mid-Koguryo era.
Upon closer examination of the building’s structure, ceiling joists and braces can be seen supported by wooden columns and braces. These columns and braces were architectural elements designed to raise the height of the ceiling in wooden houses. Both ends of the roof ridge feature Chimi (literally "owl tail" and known as Chiwei in Chinese) decorations. This is an excellent example for understanding Koguryo-era architecture.
