Eastern Wall of the Eastern Gallery - Procession – Axmen 2
zoom

This is a detailed view of the axmen depicted on the eastern gallery wall in Anak Tomb No. 3. The five axmen can be seen just behind the swordsmen. These axmen appear above the ox carriage. Koguryo infantry was divided into light infantry and the heavily-armored heavy infantry. The axmen in the image aren’t wearing helmets or armor, indicating they are light infantry. These figures are wearing military attaché Chaeks (headwear with cone-shaped points), Jeogoris (traditional Korean upper garment), and trousers. The trousers are securely tied with a strap around their calves. Although axes have been used as combat weapons, they were also used as decorative objects symbolizing authority.
