Title | The Fourth Stone Prop of the Eastern Wall (Side - Detailed view of Man-se) | ||
---|---|---|---|
This is a detailed view of Man-se painted on the side of the fourth stone prop of the eastern wall. Although typically depicted alongside Cheon-chu, Man-se appears alone in this image. Man-se symbolizes longevity and is the frequent subject of Daoist murals.
The Man-se in the image has the head of a deer and the body of a bird. It bears a strong resemblance to the Fenghuang depicted on the ceiling of the Great Tomb of Gangseo. The lines of the spread wings and raised tail have been delicately rendered.
