Koguryo-era tomb murals generally featured decorative lotus patterns, a symbol of the Buddhist Land of Bliss, and cloud patterns that symbolized the heavenly world. Both lotus and cloud patterns appear on the eastern wall of the main chamber in Susahn-ri Tomb as well. The cloud patterns depicted on this wall indicate that the chamber space is not of the real world, but instead belongs in the afterlife of the nobleman. The areas in which clouds are depicted represent the heavens, and the presence of lotus patterns in the vicinity indicates these areas represent the Buddhist Land of Bliss. The visible lotus near the ceiling is in full bloom, signifying the entombed nobleman's desires for a Sukhavati Rebirth (reborn in the Land of Bliss).
