Title | Western Auxiliary Chamber | ||
---|---|---|---|
The long, rectangular western auxiliary chamber in Anak Tomb No. 3 is slightly larger than the eastern auxiliary chamber. The portraits of the deceased contained in the western auxiliary chamber and the procession depicted on the eastern gallery wall are widely considered to be the finest works of art in Anak Tomb No. 3. The portrait of the deceased is depicted on the western wall, and the complementary portrait of the noblewoman is depicted on the adjacent southern wall. Evidence of a mural on the northern wall has yet to be confirmed, and although both sides of the threshold on the eastern wall are estimated to have featured murals at one point, only the northern section contains a depiction of a gatekeeper. Two different theories exist for the portrait of the deceased on the western wall. Some believe the figure in the portrait is King Gogugwon of Koguryo while others believe that he is Dong-su. Both theories will certainly be debated in the future.
The joists above the western auxiliary chamber feature vine-like oddly-shaped cloud patterns, and a magnificent blooming red lotus is depicted in the center of the intersecting triangular ceiling.
