The ocean does not only have fish. It also is rich in other marine resources, including oil and natural gas. Many countries are making efforts to develop and preserve marine resources.
In 1982, the international community designed a system related to the development and preservation of marine resources known as the exclusive economic zone.

○ Let’s compare Korea and Japan’s processes for setting maritime borders.

After the United Nations created the Law of the Sea in 1994, Korea and Japan each proclaimed an exclusive economic zone (EZZ) of 200 nautical miles.
However, due to the geographical proximity of the two countries, the two exclusive economic zones could not help but overlap. Accordingly, a zone was set up at the point of overlap between Korea and Japan. That zone is called a middle zone.
