Title | Wanham Player | ||
---|---|---|---|
This is a detailed view of the maid playing a Wanham in the Portrait of the Deceased on the northern wall of the antechamber in Tokhung-ri Tomb.
Koguryo era instruments can be divided into percussion, string, and wind instruments, and the Wanham, better known as a Wolgeum, is a string instrument. The Wanham is a lute with a moon-shaped wooden body, four strings, and 13 frets, from the Western Regions (generally refers to areas to the west of China). This instrument appears frequently in depictions of the heavens in Koguryo tomb murals, but Tokhung-ri Tomb is the only occasion in which it appears in a Portrait of the Deceased.
