Title | Northern Wall Column of the Main Chamber - Demon Mask 3 | ||
---|---|---|---|
This is a detailed view of the Guimyeon (demon mask) depicted on the fourth (from the west) column capital on the northern wall of the main chamber. Notably, this is the only Guimyeon imagery to be rendered in green. The outline of the face and gaping mouth are still clearly visible. The overall image of the Guimyeon is surmised to be identical to Guimyeons depicted on other column capitals.
The intimidating Guimyeon motif was commonly used in ancient times to exorcize negative energy or evil spirits. The imagery was utilized in murals or roof tiles as guardian iconography.
