Title | Lotus Pond | ||
---|---|---|---|
This is a detailed view of the lotus pond on the eastern wall of the main chamber in Tokhung-ri Tomb. Two large lotuses are blooming on the pond surface with their roots submerged. Although the details of the pond aren't fully realized, a black horizontal line indicates the water surface. Unlike other murals, the flowers were rendered in red without any outlines. This technique is indicative of the lotus' purifying symbolic property.
The lotus also symbolizes rebirth in Buddhism. The main chamber, in which the noble couple's bodies were laid to rest, was decorated with blooming lotuses to emphasize the couple's desires to reach the Buddhist Land of Bliss.
