Title | Northern Wall Column of the Main Chamber - Demon Mask 2 | ||
---|---|---|---|
This is a detailed view of the Guimyeon (demon mask) depicted on the center column capital on the northern wall of the main chamber. This image is in the most well-preserved condition of all northern wall column capitals. The Guimyeon's intimidating appearance is accentuated by black outlines, white face, and wide eyes. The Guimyeon's gaping mouth reveals its white fangs as if to strike fear in any intruders. Its fierce demeanor is scary enough to exorcize any intruding evil spirit.
The intimidating Guimyeon motif was commonly used in ancient times to exorcize negative energy or evil spirits. The imagery was utilized in murals or roof tiles as guardian iconography.
