Wang Baidan came from Hebei province in China. He participated in the commando unit of China's Eighth Route Army, and was captured and tortured by the Japanese in August 1943. He was taken from China to the Takashima Coal Mine where he worked loading coal onto trucks. Whenever anything went awry, the overseer would quickly call him an idiot (bakayarou) and beat him. Upon falling asleep from exhaustion, he was violently beaten by the overseer and ended up with a deformed spine. He was even beaten for picking up a tangerine peel to eat.
