Lee Cheon-gu was born in 1929 and lived in Hansan-myeon, Seocheon-gun County, Chungcheongnam-do Province. Around September 1942, at the age of 17, he was conscripted and taken away to the Yahata Steel Works. Knowing that his parents would suffer if he were to flee, he acquiesced to the conscription. At Yahata Steel Works, he was deployed to a production site for ammonia fertilizer. The dormitory in which he lived was a two-story building surrounded by wire mesh, in which seven people shared a single room. He escaped in 1943 after which he worked at the Imamura Factory.
