Jeong Bok-su was born in Wando-gun County, Jeollanam-do Province. In 1943, at the age of 18, he was taken to the Mitsubishi-affiliated coal mine in Sakhalin. His village had a quota of three people to send and he had no choice but to go along. About a year later, he was sent from Sakhalin to the Takashima Coal Mine. Here, the coal was dug in a mine located underneath the sea in extremely hot and dangerous conditions, and he worked two shifts both day and night. In Sakhalin he had eaten good quality Annam rice, but the food situation in Takashima was worse and he had to get by with a bit of rice mixed in with soybean cake, while his salary was little more than the price of cigarettes. With only the sea on all sides, he was unable to leave the island and all the workers there were no different than prisoners.
